RAF Typhoon jets have operated alongside France's air force in a coordinated attack targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the UK's MoD.

The site, identified by intelligence, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was located in hills just above Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a series of access tunnels leading to the depot... early reports are that the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the attack on Saturday evening and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed extremist governance over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This operation shows the UK's leading role, and determination to operate in unison with our partners, to eradicate any re-emergence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary said.

RAF aircraft have performed patrols over Syria to "prevent any attempted comeback" of IS following its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of British forces involved in this mission for their expertise and their courage," Healey said. "Including them were thousands of British personnel on duty over the holidays. This operation, to remove militants who threaten our way of life, demonstrates how our armed forces are always on standby, throughout the year, protecting the UK within its borders and strong abroad."

In December, the American forces executed what it described as a "large-scale strike" against Daesh sites in Syria, following an ambush claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The United Nations says IS still has between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in both countries.
