The White House confirmed the start of government employee terminations on the end of the week, following through on prior threats linked to the ongoing US government shutdown, which is set to stretch into its third straight week.

Official Announcement and Initial Details

Russell Vought posted on social media that “reductions in force have begun,” referring to the official procedure for terminating staff.

Although Vought did not specify which agencies were impacted, a representative from the Treasury Department stated that layoff warnings had been distributed within that department. Furthermore, a Department of Homeland Security representative indicated that staff reductions would take place at the CISA. Moreover, a labor organization representing federal workers announced that employees at the Education Department would be affected by the staff cuts.

Union Response and Court Actions

Union leaders cautions that the layoffs would have “devastating effects” on public services used by millions of Americans and vowed to contest the moves in court.

“It is disgraceful that the government has exploited the funding lapse as an excuse to illegally fire numerous employees who provide essential functions to the public across the country,” said Everett Kelley, who leads the American Federation of Government Employees.

The largest labor federation in the US responded to the news, saying, “Labor organizations will see you in court.”

Political Standoff and Budget Dispute

Lawmakers from the Democratic party have refused to vote for a Republican-backed bill to restore funding unless it contains provisions related to health policy. After multiple unsuccessful votes, the GOP leadership in the Senate have put the chamber in recess until next Tuesday, indicating the standoff is unlikely to be ended before then.

At a media briefing, the Republican House speaker, the speaker, criticized opposition lawmakers for rejecting the Republican proposal, which passed in the House on a near party-line vote.

The layoffs occurred on the very day that government employees got only a partial paycheck for the end of the previous month but excluding the start of October, since funding expired at the start of the period.

Max Stier, the president of the non-profit Partnership for Public Service, condemned the political stalemate’s impact on federal employees.

This is unjust to make federal employees suffer because our elected officials in the legislature and the White House have not succeeded to keep our government open and operational,” the advocate stated. The air traffic controllers, VA nurses, wildland firefighters and food inspectors are not responsible for this government shutdown.”

The irony is that members of Congress and top administration officials are continuing to be paid during the funding gap.
